What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only permanent method of hair removal and is approved by the FDA and AMA. Electrolysis can permanently remove hair of any color, including black, brown, white, gray, red and blond and it is effective and safe for any skin tone. Learn More.

What causes excess hair?

Heredity, stress, hormonal changes, underlying medical conditions and certain medications can all cause excess hair growth. Regardless of the cause, if you’re bothered by unwanted hair, you do not have to live with it! More About Hormones.

Which body parts are suitable for electrolysis?

Electrolysis can treat most facial and body parts, including eyebrows, chin, upper and lower lip, cheeks, neck, breasts, underarms, abdomen, bikini/genitals, arms, legs, hands, feet and back.

Electrolysis vs other hair removal methods

Electrolysis is the only permanent method of hair removal recognized by the FDA and AMA. It is safe and effective on every skin tone, hair color and texture.

Laser hair reduction works with the melanin or pigment in the hair. Laser hair reduction effectiveness is based on hair color, density and skin contrast and is best performed by a highly skilled and certified laser technician. Paradoxical Hypertrichosis is a possible side effect of laser that occurs more commonly with darker skin tones and hormonal stimulated hair growth.

Tweezing, waxing, threading, sugaring, depilatories and bleaching are temporary methods of managing unwanted hair.  Some can increase hair growth by stimulating the blood supply and all can contribute to skin irritation including ingrown hairs.  These methods come with a lifetime of maintenance.

How does electrolysis work?

A sterile, pre-packaged, disposable probe is inserted into the natural opening of the hair follicle, not piercing the skin. Low level electric current, chemical reaction or a combination of the two is applied to destroy hair growth cells and the blood supply to the follicle. When successfully treated, that follicle will not regrow hair.  Your electrologist will select the method that is best for your individual skin and hair needs. Is electrolysis painful?

There will most likely be a little discomfort. Most people describe the feeling as either a heat sensation, a pinch or sting.

The amount of discomfort you feel will depend on individual pain tolerance, the sensitivity of the body part being treated and the settings being used.

There are tips to minimize discomfort during treatment: being well hydrated, avoiding caffeine and applying over-the-counter numbing creams. Your electrologist will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that provides maximum effectiveness and comfort.
