Gender Affirming Surgery
If you are considering gender affirming surgery it is important to start electrolysis well in advance of your scheduled surgery date.
Male to Female (MTF) Reassignment
Vaginoplasty involves creating a vagina in a body assigned male at birth. The three most common Vaginoplasty procedures are Penile inversion, Peritoneal Pull Through and Colovaginoplasty.
Penile Inversion and Peritoneal Pull Through utilize skin from the penis and scrotum to make the new vagina. It is important to permanently remove hair from skin that will be used to line the vaginal canal. External hair that becomes internal during surgery can cause discomfort, irritation and serious complications. It’s not possible to remove hair from inside a vagina after surgery. Colovaginoplasty utilizes a segment of the colon to create the vaginal canal so hair removal may or may not be required prior to surgery.
Your surgeon will provide a map of the area to be cleared prior to surgery.
Female to Male (FTM) Reassignment
Phalloplasty involves altering the female genitalia to create male genitalia. Typically, additional tissue will be taken from the thigh or forearm and must be cleared of hair prior to surgery. External hair remaining on tissue used to create the interior of the urethra can create infection and discomfort. It’s not possible to remove hair from inside the urethra after surgery.
